BoxTop Technologies Limited is a UK based organisation, founded in 1995 and has two founders. Christopher Hewlett, with wide-ranging knowledge of national and international freight forwarding business processes and Bill White, a leading programmer from the fast-changing and mission critical world of industrial workflow and software development.
Together they have utilised their decades of hands-on information processing and successful freight handling business experience; and worked to deliver their shared vision for a computer aided management solution to work inside one of the world’s toughest industries – Freight…
Christopher has spent most of his business life inside the freight sector, building vast experience in co-ordinating and managing the many disciplines across the industry and covering all levels of national, international and domestic forwarding.
He has over 25 years of experience actually managing businesses in the freight industry, first as Managing Director of Freelance International Express plc, achieving one of the UK’s first quality assurance awards in 1990 for a UK Freight Company. And latterly as Founder and Managing Director of Ultimex Global Logistics plc, which, between 1992 and 1996 featured in the Sunday Times Top 100 Fastest Growing Businesses in the UK.
In 1997 he sold his interests to the management team at Ultimex so he could concentrate on the development of highly specialised transportation logistics software, freight management software, forwarding software and supply chain management software systems.
His vision has always been on effectiveness and practicalities that are so often lost within complex business organisations. Well embedded within his new venture, BoxTop demonstrates Hewlett’s own clear and unequivocal understanding of the logical systems required to deliver service quality, cost- effectiveness and process reporting.
A former Chairman of Agency Sector Management (ASM) he has been involved in the freight industry for over 30 years.
Andy has been involved in the freight and transport business for over 10 years and worked for a variety of multimodal freight forwarders. His ability to think on his feet, to quickly apply his usual common sense methods, which, when coupled with his unflappable ‘can-do’ attitude, resulted in achieving many notable successes in this rapidly changing and fiercely competitive market. He’s also worked for London Transport, where he was responsible for developing, testing and supporting statistical reporting solutions within an Internet environment, before joining BoxTop in 2002.
“Working at BoxTop is more than just a job, it’s a fulfilling and challenging vocation. It’s stimulating, sometimes frustrating, but most of the time it’s extremely rewarding and great fun! I get real satisfaction by solving complex issues or designing processes which will help our customers improve productivity and staff morale, and more often than not, help them gain new business.”
Andy, married with a young child, enjoys diving, skiing and snowboarding when he (occasionally) gets the time.
John began his career in the freight business through the FreightTrain scheme and worked for both Nissin and Belvedere Air freight forwarders before joining BoxTop in 2004.
“I always liked computers and joining BoxTop seemed like a great way to link my hobby with my job. I like it that I am still learning now – it’s always different and always challenging here.”
John has a variety of interests including playing piano and the guitar, astronomy, walking and messing about with computers.
Rhys revealed his fascination with problem solving and seeing how systems work at an early age, messing about with a Commodore 64 when he was eight years old. He later went to college and, after graduating with an International Diploma in Computer Studies, went to work for Kay O’Neill in IT support and network administration, and then JAS Worldwide before joining BoxTop in 2005.
“I like being given a challenge by the customers and finding a solution. The variety here is great – you never know what is coming next. It’s all about getting things to work.”
In his spare time, Rhys enjoys playing the guitar and mountain biking, although not at the same time!
Alex started work at the NHS as an administrator before moving into website development. He then continued in web development and worked for a large insurance company and briefly for a film company before joining BoxTop in 2007.
“I enjoy the variety and challenge of the work here. I can use my own initiative – sometimes on large complicated projects as part of a team – other times working on my own enhancing existing programmes, but whatever I’m doing it’s usually to a very tight time schedule! I really like working for a successful, professional company that’s respected by our customers.”
Alex, who studied film making at university, relaxes by playing guitar in a rock band and going to the gym.
James started his career in Bristol with freight forwarder Danzas. After working in accounts, he progressed through road and air freight operations into IT. After moving to London, he worked in the Barclay’s Capital data centre as a Lotus Notes analyst, at Sony Ericsson in head office IT support and for a foreign exchange company before joining BoxTop in 2008.
“The work is really varied. We cover everything, not just problem-solving, and look at the whole system to make sure everything continues to work well together.”
James has been a keen diver for 10 years and while he enjoys diving in the warmer waters in places like the Red Sea, Mexico and the Persian Gulf, he finds diving in the UK is more challenging (not to mention more chilling!)
Gavin, a self-confessed computer enthusiast, undertook various roles at freight forwarder Exel, including customer services manager, and worked as a manager in a healthcare business before joining Yusen Air & Sea as export manager. There he moved into IT and then joined BoxTop in 2008.
“I like the programming and working on other people’s servers to solve problems. I get to do a little bit of everything, so it is a good mix of experience. I like the challenge.”
Gavin continues his fascination for computers in his spare time – from doing Open University courses to playing computer games.
Paul joined BoxTop in November 2008 after working with another freight management software company for 14 years. He entered the IT field via the Modern Apprenticeship Scheme gaining both BTeC First and National diplomas in Computer Studies. He has moved from helpdesk, to more specific technical development, and is now currently enjoying sales and business development activities.
“I like the BoxTop philosophy. We have more freedom here to deliver exactly what the customers ask for. The world is our oyster – we give the customers what they want.”
Paul is married with two young children but still finds some time to support the Saints (Southampton FC) and he’s also golf mad. If you can’t find Paul in the office, chances are he’s on the golf course!
Jasmine joined BoxTop in 2013 having previously started her career working for a road freight forwarder. During her six years there she built up an extensive knowledge of both road import and export movements.
“Working for BoxTop is challenging, and that’s what I love so much about it. There is never a moment when you think you’re learning experience is over as there is always so much variety with tons more to learn about, the possibilities are endless.”
Jasmine is a regular face down at her local gym. She has completed several Race for Life 5k’s and most recently has survived the gruelling 13k Spartan Race. She is currently undertaking, personal training, BodyPump and RPM instructor courses with the aim of becoming a qualified instructor soon.
Hanna began her career working for an SME freight forwarder in Heathrow. During her 14 years there she worked her way up from trainee to team leader before joining the Customer Service team here in May 2013.
“I really enjoy working for BoxTop. I feel like I am always learning and love to share the knowledge. My background in freight gives me an excellent understanding of our customer’s needs, and how to translate that into the software solution.”
Hanna spends her spare time working as a fitness instructor, teaching Zumba, Insanity and BodyPump workout classes. Along with Jasmine, Hanna completed the gruelling 13k Spartan Super race, but in October 2014 Hanna took things to the extreme when she decided to trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro, raising over £1000 for charity in the process.
Shane joined the sales team at BoxTop in 2013 having worked previously with Paul at another freight software company. He started his career through the Modern Apprenticeship scheme and earned his NVQ levels 2 & 3 in Computer Studies. His 14 years there saw him promoted from the helpdesk to support supervisor and finally on to the role of UK sales manager.
“BoxTop match my ambition to help promote smarter software for the forwarder, I enjoy the look on a customer’s face when I show them how our software can make their every day jobs so much easier.”
Shane’s hobbies include going to the gym, and he is a keen middle distance runner, competing in the Studland Stampede 12k the last three years in a row. He also plays five-a-side football and is a youth development volunteer with his sons football team.
